This early 20th century image of the lake formed by the Hampden Reservoir shows the steeple of Saint Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, on 1008 West 37th Street. Also seen is the temple-like Greek Revival façade of the Hampden Methodist Protestant Church on 3500 Falls Road, both are seen on the right. By 1960, the reservoir was filled in.

Excavating the Forest Park Reservoir, or Lake Ashburton, in Hanlon Park, on the southeast corner of Liberty Heights Avenue and Hilton Street. It was given the name "Lake Ashburton" in 1910 and went into service on January 18, 1911. A steam shovel is in the center middle distance and a Western Maryland Railroad locomotive, tender and gondolas are at right.
